This was an excellent page-turner for me, which is a big compliment because quite a low percentage of modern books keep my interest so intensely.
It isn't a typical superhero story. There are, of course, some of the usual elements associated with superhero stories and, the physical changes of the main character are interesting and described in such a way as to keep the reader interested, but, at the same time, the story is more centered on her emotional development and how she deals mentally with the new challenges, as well as the reaction of those around her to her different physical appearance. Even though it was written mainly for female readers, for me as a man, it was also a refreshing read, and I don't believe it should be pigeon-holed as a novel for women.
There is plenty more to find out about the situation the characters find themselves in, both about the past and the future, and this book sets the stage for the future. For example, near the end of the book, we are introduced to a character with apparently even more advanced abilities than Nel, and I'm curious to find out her story.
I'll most certainly be looking forward to the continuation of the series and would recommend it to both men and women interested in this genre. It's well worth the read.
